Biography: My
pharmacy degree is from Oregon State, 1973. This is the
thirtieth year of my career in the U.S. Public Health Service.
My first assignment was at the USPHS Hospital in Staten Island, NY.
It was there I met my wife, Cathy. From there we transferred
to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and lived there for four years. Our
first two daughters, Raquel and Daniela, were born there. In
1981 I transferred to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in eastern
Montana, with the Indian Health Service branch of USPHS. I
worked with the Sioux and Assiniboine tribes there. Our third
daughter, Rebecca, was born there. In 1986 we moved to Maine,
where I have been working with the Passamaquoddy Tribe. Look
on your map: Passamaquoddy Bay (part of the Bay of Fundy) is
named for the tribe here. The name means, "People of the
Dawn." Since this tribe is located on the far eastern tip
of the U.S., they are the first to see the sun rise in the morning.
Hence the name. Back in Montana, I began playing around with a
shortwave receiver someone had given to us as a wedding present.
There was a strong signal from HCJB (Quito), and I heard beautiful
Indian pipe music. Later I tuned in on some CW, heard about Monitoring
Times magazine, found out about amateur radio, and I was on my
way! I started out with CW, and that remains my favorite mode,
although I have a 2M rig in my car.
